Configuration Management

Configuration Management is a system that ensures that the configuration of an item (and its components) is known and documented and that changes are controlled and tracked.

Configuration Management applies technical and administrative direction and surveillance of the lifecycle of an item in order to:

  • identify and document characteristics
  • control and document configuration changes
  • record and report the status of proposed changes and implementation status of approved changes
  • audit configuration items to verify conformance to specifications, drawings, interface control documents and other contractual requirements

The four key elements of Configuration Management are configuration identification, configuration control, configuration status accounting and auditing.
