The Characteristics of Digital Electronic Design
Design is the most significant human endeavor: It is the channel through which creativity is realized. Design determines our every activity as well as the results of those activities; thus it includes planning, problem solving, and producing. Typically, the term "design" is applied to the planning and production of artifacts such as jewelry, houses, cars, and cities.
Design Environments
Design has two fundamental aspects: its methods and its materials. Methods are the techniques that when used creatively, achieve a result, and materials are the medium on which the methods are used. For example, writers design literature by applying the methods of syntax, grammar, and semantics to the materials called words, letters, and punctuation. Sculptors apply the methods of marker,hammer, and chisel to the materials wood, marble, and ice.
Representation for VLSI Design
The most fundamental part of a VLSI design system is the representation that it uses to describe circuits. Proper representation is crucial; it can make or break the entire program. A good representation allows the circuit to be conveniently stored, accessed, and manipulated, but a bad representation limits the system by making it wasteful, hard to debug, and slow.
Synthesis Tools for VLSI Design
VLSI design has reached the point at which most circuits are too complex to be specified completely by hand. Although computers can be used to record layout, thus making design easier, they can also be programmed to take an active role by doing synthesis or analysis. Synthesis tools generate circuitry automatically and analysis tools attempt to verify existing circuitry that has been designed by hand.
Static Analysis Tools for VLSI Design
Given that it may take weeks or months to get an integrated circuit manufactured, it should not be surprising that designers often spend large amounts of time analyzing their layouts to avoid costly mistakes. It can be difficult, if not impossible, to cure design flaws, particularly on integrated circuits, so the old saw "an ounce of prevention..." is very true.
Dynamic Analysis Tools for VLSI Design
Dynamic analysis of designs is the study of a circuit's behavior as a function of time. One might, for example, be interested in the logic values on a set of outputs some time t after certain logic values become present on the circuit's inputs. Or, it might be desirable to determine the expected delay from a change in an input until the output settles.
