EBook Description: For the past three decades, we have been steadily creating an extreme time-crunch economy that has affected jobs, portfolios, businesses and lives. But the time-crunch economy is turning into the leisure economy and it will mean wrenching adjustments for our lives and institutions. Everyone from consumers, investors, businesses, and policy-makers will need to understand the changes afoot. The Leisure Economy posits profound economic changes in North America due to both the retirement of the baby boomers and the attitudes of ascendant generations X and Y. Looking at trends in demographics, economics and generational change, this book looks at how to stay ahead of the leisure economy and predicts who will be the winners and losers in the seismic shift ahead.

Powerful Finance and Innovation Trends in a High-Risk Economy

In the 1970s, the large size of enterprises was one of the symbols of the mass production system's rigidity. The second symbol was state interventionism--blamed for the economic difficulties of the period: growing unemployment and upsurge of inflation. Globalisation is characterised by the predominance of deregulated finance ("big finance") over economic activities. Between free enterprise capitalism and monopoly capitalism stands finance-based capitalism. The financial sphere is mobilised to promote variety and reinforce selection.

This book presents in its first part the financial determinants of innovation processes considered in a macro-economic perspective, which are limited by short-term constraints and studies in its second part the linkages existing between the necessity to innovate in order to survive and the constant attention given to financial results.

The Oxford Handbook of Political Economy

Over its long lifetime, "political economy" has had many different meanings: the science of managing the resources of a nation so as to provide wealth to its inhabitants for Adam Smith; the study of how the ownership of the means of production influenced historical processes for Marx; the study of the inter-relationship between economics and politics for some twentieth-century commentators; and for others, a methodology emphasizing individual rationality (the economic or "public choice" approach) or institutional adaptation (the sociological version). This Handbook views political economy as a grand (if imperfect) synthesis of these various strands, treating political economy as the methodology of economics applied to the analysis of political behavior and institutions.

This Handbook surveys the field of political economy, with fifty-eight chapters ranging from micro to macro, national to international, institutional to behavioral, methodological to substantive. Chapters on social choice, constitutional theory, and public economics are set alongside ones on voters, parties and pressure groups, macroeconomics and politics, capitalism and democracy, and international political economy and international conflict.

Fuzzy Sets in Management, Economy & Marketing

The rapid changes that have taken place globally on the economic, social and business fronts characterized the 20th century. The magnitude of these changes has formed an extremely complex and unpredictable decision-making framework, which is difficult to model through traditional approaches. The main purpose of this book is to present the most recent advances in the development of innovative techniques for managing the uncertainty that prevails in the global economic and management environments. These techniques originate mainly from fuzzy sets theory. However, the book also explores the integration of fuzzy sets with other decision support and modelling disciplines, such as multicriteria decision aid, neural networks, genetic algorithms, machine learning, chaos theory, and so on. The presentation of the advances in these fields and their real world applications adds a new perspective to the broad fields of management science and economics.

China's Economy

This book opens with an overview on the economic geography of China, such as geographical features, demographic characteristics, natural resources, rural and urban planning, and environmental protection strategies. It then describes how China's economy developed over the past 60 years starting from the initial 'Five-Year Plan,' the transitions brought about by campaigns such as the Great Leap Forward, the People's Commune, the Cultural Revolution, and also how the reform and opening-up led to a socialist market-oriented economy promulgated by Deng Xiaoping. Following that, the book describes China's basic economic system and how economic policies have benefited the Chinese people. Finally, the book illustrates China's economic achievements with official statistics and graphs and introduces the future economic plan and strategies mapped out by the central government.

Table of Contents
1. China's Economic Geography.
2. China's Economy: History and Development.
3. China's Basic Economic System and Policies.
4. China's Economic Development: Standards and Achievements.
5. China's Challenges and Her Economic Development Trends.
6. China's Role and Position in the Global Economy.

Ahead Of The Market

Wall Street spends over $1 billion a year analyzing stocks. Too bad much of that analysis is garbage, says author Zacks. He should know: he's v-p of the respected firm Zacks Investment Research, and he's witnessed how the cozy relationship between companies and their investment bankers have corrupted investing over the years. Now he's come out with not only a denunciation of sketchy analysts, but a handbook for individual investors for spotting winning stocks on their own. (A hint: it's all about the earnings estimates; firms whose projected earnings are being revised upwards are the ones to bet on.) Zacks's prose is crisp and swift, and he tackles tricky subjects with dispatch. Sometimes the book veers into an advertisement for the firm and its Web site, but the trove of clear-headed market wisdom is well worth the occasional self-promotion.

The Economy of Prestige

This is a book about one of the great untold stories of modern cultural life: the remarkable ascendancy of prizes in literature and the arts. Such prizes and the competitions they crown are almost as old as the arts themselves, but their number and power--and their consequences for society and culture at large--have expanded to an unprecedented degree in our day. In a wide-ranging overview of this phenomenon, James F. English documents the dramatic rise of the awards industry and its complex role within what he describes as an economy of cultural prestige.

Observing that cultural prizes in their modern form originate at the turn of the twentieth century with the institutional convergence of art and competitive spectator sports, English argues that they have in recent decades undergone an important shift--a more genuine and far-reaching globalization than what has occurred in the economy of material goods. Focusing on the cultural prize in its contemporary form, his book addresses itself broadly to the economic dimensions of culture, to the rules or logic of exchange in the market for what has come to be called "cultural capital." In the wild proliferation of prizes, English finds a key to transformations in the cultural field as a whole. And in the specific workings of prizes, their elaborate mechanics of nomination and election, presentation and acceptance, sponsorship, publicity, and scandal, he uncovers evidence of the new arrangements and relationships that have refigured that field.

Rebalancing the Global Economy: A Primer for Policymaking

Such was the concern about the adverse consequences for the world economy of "imbalances" that G-20 Leaders, meeting in Pittsburgh in September 2009, adopted a Framework for Strong, Sustainable, and Balanced Growth. This step followed a growing body of expert opinion that took the view that large, persistent current account imbalances in the major industrialised economies and emerging markets since 2000 had, at the very least, contributed to the global financial crisis witnessed in 2007-8 and to the subsequent Great Recession. The purpose of this electronic book is to provide policymakers and their advisers with up-to-date, comprehensive analyses of the central facets of global economic imbalances and to identify and evaluate potential national and systemic responses to this challenge. To break down the many facets of this collective economic challenge, leading experts were asked to address one of the following policy-relevant questions. 1. How large are contemporary current account imbalances? Why do they persist? 2. What are the systemic costs of imbalances? 3. What are the lessons from previous attempts to rebalance the global economy? 4. What would rebalancing entail? Which policies must change? Is collective action needed? 5. What is the political viability of proposals to rebalance national economies? 6. Are new system-wide accords needed to promote rebalancing or to discourage persistent imbalances? This volume will be of interest to policymakers, their advisers, senior officials, as well as to anyone interested in the matter of limiting global economic imbalances.

Crisis in the Global Economy

Crisis in the Global Economy is the latest and most innovative collective reflection on the state of global capitalism, developed in the mobile "multiversity" of the UniNomade network of international researchers and activists during the months immediately following the first signals of the current financial and economic crisis. It constitutes the first organic and interdisciplinary attempt to analyze a crisis that is not merely financial in nature but implicates globalization and neoliberal capitalism.

Crisis in the Global Economy begins with the recognition that the current financial crisis is a systemic crisis of the entire capitalistic system as it has been developing since the 1890s. Taking as its premise that today's financial markets are the pulsing heart of cognitive capitalism, financing the activity of accumulation, Crisis in the Global Economy shows how the flow of capital rewards production that exploits knowledge and controls spaces beyond traditional business. The ineffectiveness of the extraordinary economic measures taken by single nation-states over the past few months demonstrates that this crisis is of a completely different order. A financial crisis that affects the "real economy" shows that financialization is one of the most recent and perverse articulations of capitalism.

The contributions to Crisis in the Global Economy invite us to consider exit strategies from the current crisisstrategies that may lead us toward a new horizon of constructing the common.
