The Atom and the Apple: Twelve Tales from Contemporary Physics

Where is mankind located in the Universe? What goes on inside atoms? Was Einstein always right? Will we find extraterrestrial life in the near future? And what should be done about global warming? Sbastien Balibar, a leading authority in physics, uses illuminating stories from his own life to answer the most intriguing questions in the physical sciences today. The Atom and the Apple considers aspects of our environmentthe things we see around us, but seldom truly understandand shows that science can be an exciting adventure grounded in the phenomena of the daily world.

Physics of the Universe

This book presents a new approach to the subject of cosmology. It fully exploits Einstein's theory of general relativity. It is found that the most general formal expression of the theory replaces the (10-component) tensor formalism with a (16-component) quaternion formalism. This leads to a unified field theory, where one field incorporates gravitation and electromagnetism. The theory predicts an oscillating universe cosmology with a spiral configuration. Dark matter is explained in terms of a sea of particle antiparticle pairs, each in a particular (derived) ground state.

This leads to an explanation for the separation between matter and antimatter in the universe. There is a brief discussion of black holes and pulsars. The final chapter delves into philosophical considerations such as the different types of truth , positivism versus realism and a discussion of the role of the Mach principle in physics and cosmology.

"Physics of Semiconductor Devices"

Physics of Semiconductor Devices is a textbook aimed at college undergraduate and graduate teaching. It covers both basic classic topics such as energy band theory and the gradual-channel model of the MOSFET as well as advanced concepts and devices such as MOSFET short-channel effects, low-dimensional devices and single-electron transistors. As a prerequisite, this text requires mathematics through differential equations and modern physics where students are introduced to quantum mechanics. Concepts are introduced to the reader in a simple way, often using comparisons to everyday-life experiences such as simple fluid mechanics. They are then explained in depth and mathematical developments are fully described.

Practicing Physics for Conceptual Physics

This workbook features a user-friendly tone that makes wide use of analogous and intriguing situations. It can be used in class to develop concepts, or as an out-of-class tutorial. The printed workbook is provided with every new copy of the text.

Marine Physics

In trying to discover as much as possible about the marine environment, oceanography has split into many subdisciplines, each represented by innumerable publications. To date however, there has been no concise synthesis introducing readers to the whole array of physical processes in the sea, and showing how these processes are related to one another and to other natural phenomena. The author of Marine Physics aims to fill this gap.

Physics Problem Solver

Comprehensive problems for topics covered by Physics I to IV, including statics, dynamics, heat, electricity and magnetism, wave motion, acoustics, optics, and atomic and nuclear physics. Numerous pictorial diagrams are included with complete illustrative explanations. Problem-solving strategies are included at the beginning of every chapter for each topic covered.

Advances in Chemical Physics

Few of us can any longer keep up with the flood of scientific literature, even in specialized subfields. Any attempt to do more, and be broadly educated with respect to a large domain of science, has the appearance of tilting at windmills. Yet the synthesis of ideas drawn from different subjects into new, powerful, general concepts is as valuable as ever, thus the desire to remain educated persists in all scientists. This series, Advances in Chemical Physics, is devoted to helping the reader obtain general information about a wide variety of topics in chemical physics, which field we interpret very broadly. Our intent is to have experts present comprehensive analyses of subjects of interest, and to encourage the expression of individual points of view. We hope that this approach to the presentation of an overview of a subject will both stimulate new research and serve as a personalized learning text for beginners in a fiel

Higher Level Physics for the IB Diploma

Providing complete coverage of the latest syllabus requirements and all the HL options, this book is written by a highly experienced IB Physics teacher and workshop leader.

Physics of Baseball & Softball

This book describes the physics of baseball and softball, assuming that the reader has a basic background in both physics and mathematics. The physics will be explained in a conversational style, with words and illustrations, so that the explanations make sense. The book provides an excellent opportunity to explain physics at a relatively simple level, even though the primary objective is to explain the many subtle features concerning the physics of baseball. For those readers who already know quite a bit of physics and who will be comfortable with mathematical equations, additional material of this nature will be provided in appendices. The latest research findings and statistical data have been incorporated by the author. The book also contains many simple experiments that the reader can perform to convince themselves that the effects described do indeed exist.

Biological Physics

Product Description Biological Physics focuses on new results in molecular motors, self-assembly, and single-molecule manipulation that have revolutionized the field in recent years, and integrates these topics with classical results. The text also provides foundational material for the emerging field of nanotechnology. Biological Physics is built around a self-contained core geared toward undergraduate students who have had one year of calculus-based physics. Additional Track-2 sections contain more advanced material for senior physics majors and graduate students.
