Version Control with Subversion: One of the greatest frustrations in most software projects is version control: the art of managing changes to information. Today's increasingly fast pace of software development--as programmers make small changes to software one day only to undo them the next--has only heightened the problem; consecutive work on code or single-programmer software is a rare sight these days. Without careful attention to version control, concurrent and collaborative work can create more headaches than it solves. This is where Subversion comes into play. Written by members of the Subversion open source development team, Version Control with Subversion introduces the powerful new versioning tool designed to be the successor to the Concurrent Version System or CVS. CVS users will find the 'look and feel' Subversion comfortably familiar, but under the surface it's far more flexible, robust, and usable, and more importantly, it improves on CVS's more notable flaws. The book begins with a general introduction to Subversion, the basic concepts behind version control, and a guided tour of Subversion's capabilities and structure. With thorough attention to detail, the authors cover every aspect of installing and configuring Subversion for managing a programming project, documentation, or any other team-based endeavor. Later chapters cover the more complex topics of branching, repository administration, and other advanced features such as properties, externals, and access control. The book ends with reference material and appendices covering a number of useful topics such as a Subversion complete reference and troubleshooting guide. Version Control with Subversion aims to be useful to readers of widely different backgrounds, from those with no previous experience in version control to experienced sysadmins. If you've never used version control, you'll find everything you need to get started in this book. And if you're a seasoned CVS pro, this book will help you make a painless leap into Subversion.

Essential Skills for Agile Development: David Boschmans, Project Manager at Compuware
This book learns any developer how to apply the skills in Agile Development. Recommended reading for any software developer!
Rachid Buamar, Institute of Computer Science III, University of Bonn, Germany.
I am pretty impressed of the first three chapters. I will recommend it to my students and my project members. Date Added: 8/11/2008 | Visits: 33779 |
Recommended Approach to Software Development: This document presents guidelines for an organized, disciplined approach to software development that is based on studies conducted by the Software Engineering Laboratory (SEL), an organization sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA/GSFC) since 1976. It describes methods and practices for each phase of a software development life cycle that starts with requirements definition and ends with acceptance testing. For each defined life cycle phase, this document presents guidelines for the development process and its management, and for the products produced and their reviews.
Since its formation, the SEL has collected data from more than 100 software development projects. Typical projects range in size from approximately 35,000 to 300,000 delivered source lines of code (SLOC) and require from 3 to 60 staff-years to produce. Date Added: 8/11/2008 | Visits: 32918 |
Democratizing Innovation: Innovation is rapidly becoming democratized. Users, aided by improvements in computer and communications technology, increasingly can develop their own new products and services. These innovating users -- both individuals and firms -- often freely share their innovations with others, creating user-innovation communities and a rich intellectual commons. In Democratizing Innovation, Eric von Hippel looks closely at this emerging system of user-centered innovation. He explains why and when users find it profitable to develop new products and services for themselves, and why it often pays users to reveal their innovations freely for the use of all.
The trend toward democratized innovation can be seen in software and information products -- most notably in the free and open-source software movement -- but also in physical products. Von Hippel's many examples of user innovation in action range from surgical equipment to surfboards to software security features. He shows that product and service development is concentrated among 'lead users,' who are ahead on marketplace trends and whose innovations are often commercially attractive. Bringing Design to Software: Design of software has often taken place in isolation from the many lessons learned in the design of objects or non-computer processes. Continuing in the tradition of Donald Norman's highly influential Design of Everyday Things, this collection of essays provides essential inspiration for reflective software designers driven by practical concerns of what works, what doesn't--and why. Contains contributions by such insightful software engineers as David Liddle, Donald Norman, John Bennett, and Michael Schrage. Date Added: 8/11/2008 | Visits: 32447 |
Getting Real: The smarter, faster, easier way to build a successful web application book: This book details the business, design, programming, and marketing principles of 37signals, a small company that creates simple, focused web-based softwares.
37signals used the Getting Real process to launch five web-based applications ( Basecamp, Campfire, Backpack, Writeboard, Ta-da List ), and Ruby on Rails, an open-source web application framework, in just two years with no outside funding, no debt, and only 7 people (distributed across 7 time zones). Over 500,000 people around the world use these applications. Date Added: 8/11/2008 | Visits: 33463 |
Programming in Martin-Lof's Type Theory: In recent years, several formalisms for program construction have appeared. One such formalism is the type theory developed by Per Martin-Lof. Well suited as a theory for program construction, it makes possible the expression of both specifications and programs within the same formalism. Furthermore, the proof rules can be used to derive a correct program from a specification as well as to verify that a given program has a certain property. This book contains a thorough introduction to type theory, with information on polymorphic sets, subsets, monomorphic sets, and a full set of helpful examples.
